The second live-action series to spin-off of the hit science fiction series Stargate SG-1 was green-lighted a day after the announcement that Stargate Atlantis will be canceled after it's fifth season run. Stargate Universe will premiere with a two- hour movie in 2009 and land in a regular time slot this fall.
After unlocking the mystery of the Stargate's ninth chevron, a team of explorers travels to an unmanned starship called the Destiny, launched by he Ancients at the height of their civilisation as a grand experiment set in motion, but never completed.
What starts as a simple reconnaissance turns into a never ending mission, as the Stargate Universe crew discovers the ship is unable to return to Earth, and they must now fend for themselves aboard the Destiny.
The crew will travel to the far reaches of the universe, connecting with each of the previously launched Stargates, thus fulfilling the Destiny's original mission. Challenges will arise though as the ship comes into range of Stargates placed centuries ahead of the Destiny and the crew is unable to control the ship's navigational schedule. If someone is left behind, there is no way to go back for them, adding to the drama of encountering new races, enemies and adventures.

A research team studying the Stargate's ninth chevron is forced to flee through the gate when their secret base is attacked by an unknown enemy. They end up stranded on an Ancient ship named Destiny, billions of light years from Earth.
The evacuees from Icarus Base discover that the life-support system on the Destiny will fail in a matter of hours.

Scott and Rush take an expedition to a nearby planet to find the lime necessary to repair the carbon dioxide scrubbers aboard the Destiny. With time running out before the ship goes back into hyperspace, the team splits up. Meanwhile, Chloe uses the communication stones to speak with her mother about the death of Senator Armstrong, and Telford attempts to assert his authority among the survivors while occupying Young's body.

When the Destiny's power reserves drop to a critical level, the crew is ordered to use power for essential services only, but the rationing isn't enough to keep Rush from announcing that all on board will die within days. Meanwhile, tensions sweep through the ship as Rush has a breakdown, some of the crew demand answers from Eli, and Telford returns to judge Young's competence to command.
