Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why

Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why
English | 242 pages | ISBN-10: 0060859512 | PDF | 24.52 Mb

For almost 1,500 years, the New Testament manuscripts were copied by hand-and mistakes and intentional changes abound in the competing manuscript versions. Religious and biblical scholar Bart Ehrman makes the provocative case that many of our widely held beliefs concerning the divinity of Jesus, the Trinity, and the divine origins of the Bible itself are the results of both intentional and accidental alterations by scribes.

Have you ever felt that JRPGs can be a bit well, sterile? That you're essentially walking down a series of very pretty corridors dressed up as castles or forests or caves full of doors you can't open, knee-high walls that you can't jump over and enemies that can only be fought in separate, specially-approved arenas? The Last Story isn't like that.

The Unauthorized Star Wars Story is everything you'd expect an unauthorized video to be: fun and full of gossip. In 1977, Star Wars took the world by surprise and this documentary traces its history (Lucas had trouble obtaining funding for "the big sci-fi-space-adventure-Flash-Gordon thing," as it was called), interviews the actors, and looks at the cultish fandom that sprang up around the movie (Japanese fans traveled to the U.S. on Star Wars tours merely to see the film before it opened in their own country). The dish is plentiful and entertaining: Carrie Fisher hated Princess Leia's hair, pranksters would paste pictures of naked women in R2D2's costume, the actors thought the film was "rubbish" as they were making it. The many interview clips include discussions with Charles Lippincott, former vice president of Lucasfilm; Anthony Daniels, who played C3PO; Harrison Ford; Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca; Kenny Baker, better known as R2D2; Carrie Fisher; Mark Hamill; Rick McCallum, producer of The Phantom Menace; and George Lucas. Occasionally the documentary gives a bit too much information (do we really need to see George Lucas's hometown and listen to his neighbors?), but no matter--it doesn't detract from the overall voyeuristic nature of the video. The later films are touched on (Samuel L. Jackson is interviewed), but the concentration is on the original, Episode IV: A New Hope. Whether you're a casual fan or one of the devoted who wait all night in line for tickets to the next installment, The Unauthorized Star Wars Story is an interesting, fun, behind-the-scenes look at one the best-loved films of all time.

Waldemar Januszczak discusses the background to important works of art, revealing why they were created and what they were intended to convey.
Season 1, Episode 1 - "Mr. and Mrs. Andrews" by Thomas Gainsborough
Januszczak begins by analysing Gainsborough's painting Mr. and Mrs. Andrews, which contains subversive elements at odds with its idyllic subject matter, and appears to have been deliberately left unfinished. In his portrait of two aristocratic 18th-century British landowners, Gainsborough may have intended to depict bird carcasses in the unfinished area in the ladys lap as a not-so-subtle comment on the couples marriage and social position.

Season 2, Episode 1 - "Boy Bitten by a Lizard" by Caravaggio
The background to Caravaggio's Boy Bitten by a Lizard, which depicts a youth recoiling in pain as a lizard lurking among flowers bites his middle finger. Caravaggios painting contains a lesson to the viewer about the transience of youth, the perils of sensual pleasure, and the precariousness of life. Caravaggio was a penniless artist when he created this early work not long after his arrival in Rome in 1592 and Januszczak sets out to explain the meaning behind the symbolism contained within the painting.
